The Painted Lady Returns (Maybe)

The first I have seen of the species this year (which is 100% more than last year already). I also had to travel well out of the local area to find it. So I was fortunate to get some shots of this beauty.

I am inclined to think that its a female above. Its a migrating species arriving from North Africa in May and June and I did read an interesting fact that its the only species that has been recorded as being observed in Iceland. (must have flown First Class on British Airways.) {:))

I have read of some sightings this year, but don't know how many we will see altogether.

A brood created in country by the migrators will appear in August. This will be the time when, if many have made it here in the first place) that we shall see brilliant fresh new Painted Ladies.

  1. I always enjoy your butterfly pics. Can't believe they fly all the way from Africa, incredible creatures aren't they?

  2. Cracking set of images Roy, especially the first two. Are there two butterflies here?

I've not seen any so far this year (only saw one last year!) Lets hope they arrive in good numbers and, with luck, have a good breeding year!...[;o)

    1. Thanks Trevor, yes there are two here I think as I observed one which after being photographed flew down the track out of sight and shortly after one returned. My Wife observed several together down the track.

  8. Beautiful photos Roy, I do think they are attractive butterflies. I didn't see one last year either and have yet to see one this. It was great when there was such an influx of them a few years ago, I suppose that's too much to hope for this time but you never know :-)

  9. Hey Roy... Wonderful close-up photos especially of the hairs standing up on the back of the neck..that's what happened to me when the snap of lightened hit very close by the other day! Yikes!!
How many butterflies has it been so far now, your hat must be getting pretty roomy isn't it??
It is a lovely color, but if I was going to be a painted lady I would rather be a different color, I don't look good in orange!! ; )!!
