Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly

A very encouraging sign.

I have observed a few of these now in the last week. I did see the first one of the year back in mid March. There was a lot of reports that this species was in decline in the previous couple of years and the numbers had suffered badly due to the inclement weather. Hopefully they are starting to recover, if the sightings I have had is anything to go by.

  1. These seem to be one butterfly that's bucking the trend this year, I've read and heard that they're putting on a good showing at the moment!

    Excellent set of images Roy...[;o)

  4. How do you get such fantastic pictures? That's really encouraging news let's hope it carries on that way. We're still massively down on butterfly numbers here (hampshire).

    1. Thanks Noushka. The numbers I have seen this year are certainly encouraging from the big fat '0' of last year.

  11. Hey Roy....I wasn't sure if I pushed publish when I comment on this post yesterday, and looks like I did't : )!!
Of course I was insanely jealous that you had another butterfly ; )
Very nice colors ..my favorite is the third from the top, because you can see those hairs on the back so well, great shot!!
I also like the second from the last with the nice pitch, and the last with the nice wing spread!!
