The Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus)
I photographed these at a local nature reserve in a small pond. I have seen them before over the last few years. Last year this pond was full of water and the newts were there, although the previous year it was completely dry and I wonder how these newts actually survive.
Not seen these for a few years Roy. Great shots of them.

DeleteGood photos here Roy:) Lovely to see them. I wonder if they prefer water in chalk/limestone areas, as up here they are found mostly in dew ponds in the White Peak, not in ponds in the Dark.

You've got 3 in one photo, that means males are still after females to breed!
At least, contrary to other animal species, too much water will not harm them...
Here it is awful so much rain, something unseen for decades...

ReplyDeleteI know the ones we have here lay there eggs in water, but are found out of water in moist places when grown !

What is particularly so to encounter. These salamanders Furthermore also be photographed in the water. Very well done!

DeleteGreat to see them thriving Roy. I think there are some in the village here but I only get common ones in my pond.
ReplyDeleteYes I was surprised they came back after the year before last John. The pond was completed dry that year.
DeleteSorry to tell you this but all bar perhaps the last photo are clearly smooth newts! The last photo may well be a female great crested though can't be sure.
