Two Commoners

Two of our common species.

These images were taken during a snow flurry,
hence the white specks that appear in some of them.

The Dunnock
Although brown in general appearance, close inspection reveals quite a lot of pattern in this bird.

The Great Tit

Quite the opposite to the Dunnock, you can see a Great Tit coming from a mile away.{:))
This is a male that has a broad black stripe down the front, the female has a narrow broken stripe.

  1. Dunnocks are under-rated birds aren't they and your photos have really captured their interesting and subtle plumage :-) Good to see the Great Tits too :-)

  3. A great set of images Roy. Far from being brown and drab I think the Dunnock has a beautifully intricate set of plumage and is quite stunning in the right light!...[;o)

  6. Hi Roy, you have made beautiful pictures of these two 'commoners'. But, as a bird-lover, I think there are no common birds. Every bird is beautiful in his own way (well, almost every bird). I much like the Dunnock pictures, nice details, stripes, warm colours....

    Kind regards,
    Marianne

    1. Hi Marianne, thanks, I was meaning common in the sense of numbers rather than anything else. They are all lovely birds in their own way.

  7. Lovely images, Roy - I love the Dunnock. I rescued one recently after it crashed into the window - a lovely experience.

    1. Thanks Christian, I had an experience in the same way once, where I rescued a Swift that had grounded and could't get airborne without a little help from me.

  8. I have to agree with all of the above, the Dunnock is much under-rated and has the sweetest simple song. (-:

  9. Hey Roy...I like the first one it shows the nice line of gray that is around the eye and cheek area (do birds have cheeks?) ; )
The Great Tit always looks very dapper with his black strip down his front!!
    Very nice commoner shot's!!

  11. A great set of pics again Roy. Dunnocks are attractive little birds and of course they have a very colourful personal life! The Great Tit is very handsome I think.
