One of the small woodland areas of the Parkland that I walk has a number of trees that blossom. I am not sure what kind of tree, maybe a cherry of some kind. Its too tall to be blackthorn. At this time and on into the summer I normally see at least one pair of Bullfinch in that area.
Walking by one of the trees I could hear the unmistakable calls of a pair of these birds.
Searching high up amongst the flowering buds, there they were not far from each other.
As you can see from the images they were feeding on the emerging buds.
The female looked in good shape with her plumage almost spring like in quality.
The male however needs to smarten up considerably, he looked a bit worse for wear and it would be a while before he was in his spring plumage.
They look nice and fat, obviously been fed well over winter. I had a lot of activity in the garden this morning, including two parakeets.
ReplyDeleteFat, but uncooperative Helena, as they were high up in the tree and mostly hiding behind twigs.
DeleteI have never seen those green parakeets.
Well spotted Roy. Perhaps the lady fancied a bit of rough? I'm sure, when needs must, he'll scrub up just fine!!...[;o)
ReplyDeleteThanks Trevor, yes he will need to get his act in order.
DeleteBeautiful birds Roy.
ReplyDeleteYou got some great shots there.
Thanks Keith.
DeleteYou need to take a trip to the Kew/Richmond area Roy to try for the Parakeets unless they've spread a lot further recently. Those Bullfinches are'nt the most co-operative of birds, but you got some lovely photos! (-:
ReplyDeleteThanks Jen, I guess they will spread further as well as time goes on.
DeleteThey are lovely birds, very striking I think. I was trying to photograph a beautiful male a few days ago but it was too far away...not to mention the twigs! Yours are much better.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jan. They don't make it easy.
DeleteLovely pictures Roy, the female certainly does look plump and in good condition.
ReplyDeleteI do love Bullfinches! that 'squeaky gate' call of theirs is unmistakeable. Mr looks as if he is still moulting, or is that bits of pollen and petals stuck to his head?

I think its probably moulting mainly John.

ReplyDeleteYou have some very nice pictures. beautiful color and very clear.
