Gull Behaviour

Black-headed Gulls at play.
I watched these gulls the other day flying against the wind on a lake. They kept diving down and catching dead leaves that were floating on the water. They would then fly along and dropped them again and then find another leaf and do exactly the same. It appeared like they were just playing a game on a dull windy day for something to do.

  1. What's the saying?...'practice makes perfect'. I guess they're just honing their skills for when they need to 'catch' some bread or if they're really lucky the odd chip or two!!

Great observation Roy and well captured...[;o)

  4. What a pretty and elegant gull, Roy! I saw some of these on Frank's blog as well. They remind me of our Bonaparte's gulls. Interesting behavior you observed. Were they perhaps using the leaves to attract fish to the surface?

    1. It may have been Kathie. We see a lot of these as they are our most common gull seen inland.

  6. Huh, I've never seen gulls do this with leaves. Mussels, yes but not just leaves.
