A Late Speckled

Found basking in the sunlight in broad-leaved woodland, (its natural habitat) this Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) is near the end of the flight time for this species. There are still quite a few flying though, a consequence of our continued warm weather.

  3. I'm still seeing plenty, but after tomorrow I think that will be it for all butterflies bar the hardy red admirals

  6. I think I've seen more speckled wood butterflies than any other kind this summer. They were certainly still around last week in my garden but I suspect the colder temperatures and rain will be the end of them now.
