Meadow Brown

The Meadow Brown (Maniola jurtina).

One of the commonest species in UK, which frequents mostly grassland during its life.
This is the first sightings I have had this year which were observed yesterday. It will not belong before it becomes a common sight and will be overlooked in favour of some other species.{:))

In the first few images the Male can be identified by the two black spots on the underside of the inner wing.

The one below is a female of the species.

  1. I bet you had to get down low for these super images Roy?...lol!
As you say they'll soon be a common sight, with more and more now appearing daily.

I saw my first Dark Green Fritillaries and Ringlets of the year yesterday...it seems to be building up to an excellent butterfly year....[;o)

    1. Not quite the prone position Trevor, but the grass wasn't completely dry.{:))
The elusive DG Fritillary is still a target species for me. Yes it looks as it it will if this weather keeps up.

    1. Yes I think they are pretty much the same as I have seen photos on various blogs Karen, but I can't recall what your species is called.

  5. Hey Roy.... The 2,3,4, shot's are greatly color coordinated , of course perhaps you would have to be thinking like I did and I bet Karen did too, "What lovely colors to put together for quilting," : },but since you do painting maybe you thought that too ...okay enough of that!!

Very nice photo's from the not quite prone position...hope you have good balance !!

  6. Very nicely captured Roy. I saw my first in Kent and Surrey this week plus one Ringlet so it bodes well for the coming weeks ... weather permitting.
