Marvellous Marbled

The Marbled White Butterfly (Melanargia galathea)

I was pleasantly surprised to find Marbled White on the wing yesterday, which is about the earliest I have found it in this part of the country (from my records anyway).

I was also fortunate to get some shots of the few that I observed, as generally at this early period in their flight time they tend to be very 'skittish', never remaining pitched for any sensible time for photography.
This suggests to me that I must have caught them on the first day of emerging.

  3. Very nice Roy! Hoping to get my first ones fairly soon. Still find it hard to believe that the Marbled White is a 'Brown' butterfly!

  4. A very nice find Roy. From memory my earliest sighting last year was the 1st week of June. Is everything going to be early this year?

  10. A great series of photos! It's interesting how the simple colours can add up to something so beautiful when arranged in such a lovely pattern.
