Green-veined White and Others

Green-veined White Butterfly (Pieris napi)

This female is the first I have seen this Spring. I think it had not long emerged from Chrysalis.

The warm weather is certainly bringing out the first species in quite promising numbers already.
A good year for butterflies is certainly needed after the recent few years.

The Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni)  are feeding on any flower it can find including the Blackthorn and Dandelion.

This first Peacock (Inachis io) was spending all its time sunning itself on a stony track.

Some Peacock like the one below, although in poor condition was still flying and eating where it could.

  1. You have been very busy lately Roy and it is fantastic to see all the butterflies again :-) I have yet to see GV Whites or Orange Tips this year so it was doubly pleasing seeing your excellent pics :-) I also enjoyed all the windflower pics in an earlier post plus the Little Owl, a bird which used to be common on my patch but which I rarely see these days :-(

    1. Hi David, thanks, yes I have been trying to get around and find whats on offer, which is usually the case when the first butterflies should be emerging. That GV White is the one and only so far. The Little Owl is the only one of, what I believe is a pair, I have have ever seen in this area.

  3. Cracking image of the Wood Anemone for the new header Roy.
Excellent recent posts on the the emerging butterflies. I've only seen the one GV White so far this season, and that was through the window from the comfort of my living room, as it flitted around the garden for a few brief minutes.
    Here's hoping for a good butterfly year...[;o)

    1. Thanks Trevor. Hopefully, we will get a good year, if we don't get a load of rain.

  4. Another great set of photos...
I must have checked all the Dandelions in the park yesterday looking for a Brimstone, but no luck... there was a good number of small tortoiseshell butterflies, which as you said looks promising. Far to cold and windy to day...

    1. Thanks Amanda, yes the weather varies at the moment, somedays its far too cold for any butterflies to be out flying.

  10. Nice to see some many flutters! Have been rescuing several Peacocks from the sheds of my customers this week! Obviously coming out of hibernation and unable to find a way out!
