The Farming Post

Harvesting the Oilseed Rape while the good weather holds.

Not quite ploughing and not quite disc harrowing, a mixture of both really. Small shears (on the front of the implement drag shallow in the harvested soil and the disc harrows level and break down the clods of earth.

There are so many different farm implements now that get pulled behind tractors. It use to be straightforward and simple; a plough, a disc harrow, a roller and a chain harrow.

  4. Farm machinery seems to get bigger, and more expensive, every year Roy. No wonder many farmers have to hire things these days.

    1. Yes John, I would think that Harvester was a about £250,000 and the tractor about £140,000.

My Uncle was a potato farmer, and the prices of machinery put him in the ground!!

    1. Thanks Noushka, there are still a lot of butterflies about, but the bird population will change soon, Summer species migrating and then a gap before the winter ones arrive.

  7. I can imagine that plowing and harrowing in the pass helps save on the diesel costs.
