Dragons in Flight

The first of the Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) Dragonfly that I have seen this year.
As it or any of its mates didn't pitch anywhere, I took some airborne shots of it instead.

This species measures 70mm in length.
These shots are of the male, the female is brown and bright green.
It likes vegetated ponds and can be found well away from water in woodland rides.

Lumix GH3.  35-100mm lens. 1/1600 at f2.8.  85mm. ISO800.

NB. The Panasonic Leica 35-100mm 2.8 Micro Four Thirds lens used for these shots is equivalent in DSLR terms to a 70-200mm f2.8 lens.

  2. HI Roy Such crisp clear shots. Wonderful. I am really impressed as I cannot even get a descent shot when they land!!!!

  3. Wow! Cracking set of flight shots Roy.
Every year I try for shots such as these and, so far, the success rate has been pretty poor. I think I'll just leave it to the master!...[;o)

  4. Brilliant Roy. Having tried many times I know how difficult it can be to capture them in flight. A great achievement.

  8. Wonderful photos Roy, this is an interesting looking dragonfly. I've seen more colors of them the further south I go. I was in a parking lot at a supermarket this morning and they were flying all over the place. Couldn't figure out why they were there and not near their usual habitat. We could have been real close to some marshy area and not known it I suppose. Thank you for the funny quip about Gregg's repose. We both had a good laugh when we read it. Have a good one :)

  9. Geweldig Roy! Heel knap om ze zo vliegend op de foto te krijgen en het is ook nog eens zo'n mooie soort. Complimenten,

  12. Gorgeous shot of this Aeshna cyanea in flight!
I have seem a few but never had a chance to take one shot!
They patrol at the edge of the woods and when they perch, it is totally out of reach!!
So I can only admire your shots!!
    Fantastic!

  13. I'm amazed at the shots you were able to get of this species in flight! What wonderful colors as well. It looks like a child opened a box of crayons and used them all!
