Nuthatch Abode

On one of my walks there is a large tree the other side of a river. About 40 feet up the tree I noticed a hole and almost immediately a Nuthatch landed next to the hole. I watch it entering and returning out of the hole several times. It was preparing the hole for nesting. It left and returned on numerous occasions. I wasn't sure if it was the same bird visiting each time. Subsequently a bird returned and remained outside the hole. It was joined by another and it was obviously the male offering titbits to the female.

  4. Lovely series of photos. Well spotted. What may have made the hole originally?

    1. Thanks John. It was probably a Great spot woodpecker. There is a grown over parting in the tree and this would have been easier for a woodpecker to create the original hole.
