Long-tailed House Hunting

For a short period I watched a pair of Long-tailed Tits moving around a large bush in the Woodland that I walk. It is behaviour that I observed last year of another pair and subsequently they made a nest in the location.

It certainly wasn't the kind of feeding behaviour that one would have associated with this species in recent months. So I am assuming that this pair may be searching a suitable site ready for this year. Long-tailed Tits prefer low thick bushes and build their nest out of sight deep in the bush. They rear one brood of 8 to 12 from April through to June.

  3. HI Roy These are beautiful shots of this pretty little bird. I hope you can find where they are building the nest and get some shots even though this will be difficult.

  4. I remember coming across one of their nests under a tree when I was out running. Really beautifully constructed and soft looking, strong but delicate. Sadly, no match for a strong wind.

    1. The nest is amazing Simon. They usually try to build deep in thick bush for that reason.

    1. They are amazing little birds Kathie.
The families when reared tend to stick together and flock with others on through the Winters as well.

  11. You have some nice shots here. Most of our tots are cavity nesters. But I guess with that long tail, cavit nesting just wouldn't do.

    1. It is a faint call, but lots of them during the winter are fairly easy to pick out Suzie. Now of course its just two and they are more difficult to find.
