The Fenland at Dusk

A short drive out on the Fenland revealed a misty dull afternoon with the occasional sun being regularly blocked or partially obscured by the thick cloud and mist.

Before dusk arrived and the sun setting, I was able to find and take some shots of the largest flock of Lapwing I have seen in a long time.

I was thinking to myself, 'This could be the entire contingent of the East Anglian flock of Lapwings here flying about before me'. Although not all appearing in the images taken, I would roughly estimate 300+.

A very encouraging sight.

The next three images are a variation on a theme.

Below.
Miserable isn't it.

My local Birding colleagues will recognise exactly where I was during this shoot.

I am fairly sure this flock were Golden Plover that eventually grounded with the Lapwing.

I think this below is a mix of Lapwing and Golden Plover

  1. At least you saw a bit of sun Roy!
That's a magnificent sight to see...a large flock of Lapwing swirling around in the sky is something special and even better that they were joined by some Golden Plover....[;o)

  4. Some lovely atmospheric shots of fenland. I love those winter evenings when there is a knee-deep layer of mist lying over the fields - should be happening soon.

  11. Oh such fabulous photos - and lucky you seeing such enormous flocks of these birds. I do see Lapwings here in winter but not in huge flocks and they tend to just stand about on recently ploughed land. As for Golden Plover, well now I'm just jealous. :-p

    1. Thanks Mandy, I get to see quite a few flocks of G/Plover on the fens during this time, but they are invariably a long way away.
