Small Heath Butterfly

The Small Heath Butterfly (Coenonympha pamphilus)
Another of our small species with an average wingspan of 34 to 38mm.
This species can be found throughout the UK.
Not the easiest species to see normally and there is some luck involved in finding it.

As you can observe below, the Common Spotted Orchids are now flowering well and are numerous on the Woodland Nature Reserve that I visit regularly.

  1. Gorgeous orchids and lovely pics of the Small Heath!
We have many around here and your pics make me feel somewhat ashamed not to have taken one shot of them yet.... Dragonflies are retaining most of my attention these days!
    Really an enjoyable post, Roy!
    Keep well!

  3. Delightful pics. Lots of butterflies don't sit still long enough for a photo op! You must be a patient soul.
It will be some time, yet, before our purple orchids dot the meadows!

Did you find any Common Twayblade (listera ovata) they can usually be found in the same location along with the Orchids?...[;o)
