Large and Small (Cabbage White Butterfly)

The Large White Butterfly (Pieris brassicae) and the Small White Butterfly (Pieres rapae) are known colloquially as the Cabbage White. They do like to lay their eggs in gardens on cabbages and other greens, subsequently the caterpillars munch their way through the cabbages. So they do get plenty of bad press.{:))

  1. yes I'm aware of that reputation too Roy; since it's the only butterfly that visits my garden (and lays eggs on the nasturtiums). Still I think it's attractive, and even more so on the mauve flowerheads you photographed so well

  6. Hey Roy... Wow you got one with it's wings spread!!
They always seem to be in the closed position for me, that is if I can catch up with those fast moving buggers!!
Yes they do get a bad rap, but here it is just gorgeous on the purple thistle flower!!
    Wonderful photo's!!

  8. Maybe if they were more colourful, people wouldn't mind so much. Grew up with the Large White in Australia and only found out this year they are an introduced pest species! I dont think they do much harm to a natural ecosystem though.

  9. They may be common in Europe I still find them very handsome!
They lay their eggs on the plants their larvae (caterpillars)will need to feed on.
Your pics are beautiful and pay a glorious tribute to these lovely creatures!
    Cheerio!
