Woodland Walk

Images from my latest walk through the local Woodland Nature Reserve.
Although the weather has warmed a little, the woodland still looks generally rather sparse and lacks greenery. However there are a few signs of Spring with some flowers showing and the resident bird species are quite active now. No sign of the early Spring visitors such as the Chiffchaff as yet, but its still early. The sound of the Great-spotted Woodpecker drumming on branches and the occasional 'laughing' Green Woodpecker was heard, but not seen.

Primroses are starting to show in various areas.

Birds such as this male Great Tit were moving through the branches chasing after females.

This Lesser Celandine below was emerging encouraged by the warm sunshine

This below is a good spot for Butterflies later on, such as the Silver-washed Fritillary and the Speckled Wood.

Some bramble leaves are visible and deserving of a photograph.

I observed this Wren moving about in the undergrowth and each time I drew near he flew off again and I couldn't get a clear shot.

This old rusty rake below was almost covered in brambles last Summer, but is quite visible now for the moment.

This Robin was in the process of chasing another.

We walk by the Common Field Daisy and because its so small we hardly notice it.
If you look closer it reveals a beauty all of its own with the pink edging to the petals.

Sallow Buds are always a welcome sight which means Easter is approaching.

The Dunnock is very active now chasing after females and quite often flapping its wings in some kind of courtship action.

Colt's-foot peeking through the dead grass is another early arrival.

Some of the tracks (as below) have been improved by laying stone where there was surface water or mud previously. To the right and left of this image there will shortly be a mass of Wood Anemone and subsequently Bluebells.

  1. Lovely to see spring has come to where you live. Loved the shots of the single tree, the Pussy Willow buds and great you captured the Robin and Wren in their search for love. A lovely place to have a walk.

  6. When we look close there are spring things to find, but looking over the land it still looks very bleached and barren. The Primroses look lovely and still have to record my first Lesser Celandine at the park.

  10. A lovely walk with you Roy, how nice to your surroundings!
To photograph the wren easily, try my system next winter, it works to perfection!!
It is truly a wonder to observe it intimately.
I also enjoy hearing the pecker's intimidation drummings and the loud bird songs, the woods seem so alive already!
    Enjoy your week, keep well!
