The Late Afternoon Pasque

Fortunately there are still some Pasque Flowers in flower, although they are at the end of the season now at the location where I observe them.

I took all of these images towards the end of the afternoon and the low sun provided a different presentation of the flower when taken from the right angle.

The next four images below are a variation on a theme.

There are still a few fresh plants around.

I think that the flowers that have gone to seed provide a special image all of their own.

Banded Demoiselle

First one I have found this year.

This appears to be a very young male Banded Demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens) as it hasn't turned dark blue yet, so must have just emerged.

Sometimes an image of a bird can be more artistic if it doesn't fill the frame of a photograph and you can find a suitable background to support it.

Orange Tip Butterfly (Female)

The Orange Tip Butterfly (Anthocharis cardamines) 

The female has similar markings to the male apart from the grey area on the forewings rather than the orange on the male which is also much larger.

Early Purple

The Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula)

One of our wild orchids.

 A perennial herbaceous plant that flowers from April to June growing to a height 50 to 60 cm.
