Kittiwakes off Portland Bill

Adult Kittiwake

Sitting on the Cliffs and taking photographs of the Kittiwake in the sunshine is quite a pleasant pastime.

There are currently four active nests on the West cliff off Portland Bill.

Young Kittiwake

It takes three years for a Kittiwake to obtain full adult plumage.

The Kittiwake is a species of concern and listed on the Red list.
When not breeding (which is only one brood) it spends most of its time at sea in the Atlantic.
An average life span of this species is 12 years, but there is a record of one surviving 28 years.

  1. I love watching seabird colonies though it's been a while since I've had the opportunity. Noisy, smelly, but oh so graceful.

    1. Thanks John. There were only four nests on the cliffs. Did smell anything, but they were a long way away.😁

  2. Bonjour Roy.
C'est une très jolie mouette, on l'a rencontre quand on part en mer à partir de septembre, elle longe les côtés du Pertuis, c'est un régal.
Très belle série en vol mon ami.
