The Chalkhill Returns

The Chalkhill Blue Butterfly (Polyommatus cordon)

The prettiest (I think) of the Blue species in UK which can only be found in somewhat limited, but well established locations mostly in Southern England. One brood only occurs between July and September. The species is limited in habitat due to its preference for warm chalk or limestone hillsides. Knapweed and Field Scabious are its favourite flowers and the first place to look to find it.

Male

The female rarely perches with its wings open so I was fortunate to obtain these images.

  1. I agree Roy, definitely the best looking of our 'blues'. They appear to be doing exceptionally well on the local patch again this year.

You've captured a cracking set of images here...you must have worked your charm on those females?...[;o)

  5. Lovely pictures of the Chalkhill Blue butterfly, very pretty. The best place for these butterflies here in the South is Portland, I have not been to Portland yet, hopefully next week.

  6. I am always impressed with the number of butterflies that you find. You did a good job with these blues. Ours are rather energetic and are difficult to shoot.

    1. Thanks Helma, yes they only like limestone type soil areas so I doubt you would get them your area.
