Small Tortoiseshell (Summer Brood)

Based on the fact that its in excellent condition, this one below that I photographed recently must be from the second (Summer) brood. It will search for and feed on various flowers and then hibernate for the Winter.
It will be one of the first species to emerge in Spring.

  1. There is such beauty in this butterfly. Great shots Roy. Must have been a good year for butterflie

  2. They really are pretty little creatures, their beauty only spoiled by over-familiarity.

    1. Thanks John, yes we tend to ignore them if there is a lot about after a while.

    1. Thanks Gunilla. The thistle made a nice addition. You can't always get them with a decent background.

  6. Lovely photos as always. I've seen very few butterflies this summer, there are a few speckled woods and the odd white butterfly in my garden but not the usual influx of Red Admirals and Peacocks that come for the plums. You seem to have seen a lot though so maybe it's just me rather than being a poor season for them.

    1. Thanks D. Its surprising how the numbers vary from year to year in one location.

  7. It is a beauty, I've seen so few second flight butterflies this year. Only really seeing red admirals and large whites up at the moment, and the lavender is fading. Still smells glorious though.

  8. He/she is certainly in excellent condition and well done capturing these lovely pics :-) Hopefully it'll make it through the winter and brighten up one of those sunny and crisp early spring days in a few months time :-)

  9. Lovely captures, you are always guaranteed to get a good picture of the small tortoiseshell because they always have their wings open unlike some butterflies who you almost have to beg for them to open their wings so you can get a good picture of them and often they remain non compliant.

    1. Thanks Lyn, yes they are very helpful and a really colourful species that perhaps we overlook more then we should do.
