A parent Pied Wagtail teaching her immature how to search for food on low grassland.
You can see that the parent has the dishevelled appearance of a bird that has spent much time recently rearing young.
This one looks fed and in good condition already and can stand on one leg as well....
.....as does this one.
They can still be a bit reluctant at times and adopt the sitting position waiting for food to be brought to them, which incidentally didn't happen.
"Look this is how you do it."
You wouldn't have thought that walking around picking up food from the ground would need much detailed instruction. I would however love to know the purpose of spending so much time on slate roofs or tarmac car-parks.
ReplyDeleteSomething to do with heat radiation perhaps John.

ReplyDeleteThanks Bas.
DeleteWonderful vignette about lazy children being taught to fend for themselves. My parents should have showed me this years ago.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteLimited table manners Simon.?
Lovely set of photos Roy, I remember that dishevelled feeling well - Mrs Wagtail has my sympathy:)

DeleteEntertaining series and commentary, Roy!
ReplyDeleteLovely set of photos.. :o)
ReplyDeleteLovely Roy, young birds begging to be fed by their parents even though they are fully grown always makes me smile. I love the Pied Wagtail, I have often wondered what attracts them to car parks, it does seem to be during the winter months. I saw one in Bournemouth flitting in and out of a cake shop, Greggs I think it was, picking up any crumbs off the floor.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lyn. They like the warmth from the car park lights at night and there are usually trees to roost in as well.
DeleteHello Roy
