Hawker and Darter

Brown Hawker Dragonfly (Aeshna grandis)

Not often do you find this species pitched so you have to take every opportunity to shoot a few images.
I think this is a female that I found.

Common Darter Dragonfly (Symptrum striolatum)

The first one is possibly an immature male and others immature females.

  1. Great photos! I've never seen a brown hawker, but the one I see here (Southern) never ever seems to stop flying, so I know what you mean! Haven't seen any common darters yet. You seem to see everything earlier than me - like the silver washed fritillary on the previous post, which by the way the photos are stunning (as is the butterfly). :-)

    1. Thanks Mandy, yes the Brown is just as bad. Very rare to see it pitched.

  2. You've got some lovely photos here - I really like the last one with the seedhead. The silver washed fritillary in your previous post is a beautiful butterfly - your brambles seem to attract a better class of butterfly than ours do:) The only ones I've seen a few of so far this year are speckled woods.

    1. Thanks D, our Summer appears a little late in arriving, so I hope that you will see more species soon.

  3. Nice shots Roy. Yes I would agree, a female. I spent nearly the whole season last year trying for some photos of these. One of the hardest to get in my opinion.

    1. Thanks Marc, it was a rare event seeing the Brown Hawker pitched. I think I have only managed it about 3 times ever.

  11. I like the pictures ... but I'm afraid of these insects... but I don't know why...
Probably trauma from past lives... no other explanation... ;-D
