Emperor Dragonfly (Anax imperator)♂
The largest species of Dragonfly in UK.
Common in Southern and Central England.
Very territorial.
This male is my first sighting of this species.
Southern Hawker Dragonfly (Aeshna cyanea) ♀
Another large species and very common in Southern and central England.
It hunts away form water along woodland rides which is where I photographed this female.

ReplyDeleteThanks Ian.
DeleteWe have emperors round here out of town, though I've never seen one. Southern hawkers, and last year migrant hawkers, more numerous in town. The southerns are a bit greener, and bigger, than the migrants is the crappy rule of thumb I use to id them. Probably wrongly.
ReplyDeleteThanks Simon, I usually have to look in the book.{:))
DeleteExcellent shots Roy, I have never managed to photograph an Emperor!
