More Recent Flutters

Peacock (Inachis io) - Female (left), Male (right)

After some considerable time with the male following the female about on the ground, the female flew off closely followed by the male.

Female Large White (Pieris brassicae)

Female Green-veined White (Pieris napi).

Female Small White (Pieris rapae)

To easily identify the difference from a Small White compared to a Large White (the size notwithstanding, which is not so obvious in the field sometimes). With the Large White, the dark tip on the forewing extends down the side of the wing, whereas it doesn't on a Small White.

Things have started to build up nicely on the butterfly front just now, we'll soon be spoiled for choice on where to point the camera!...[;o)

  6. Hey Roy.... Lovely shot's, and those Peacock butterflies are sure colorful. My favorites are the soft colors, especially the one on the white blossoms.
Not seeing much of anything here for butterflies. Hope things get better.

  8. Beautiful butterfly photos, Roy. I didn't know you could tell the male from the female Peacocks! I shall have to look that up. Also enjoyed your Pasque flowers, something I've never seen in the wild. :-)

    2. Well I have learned to tell male from female Swallowtails but the proof is in the anal claspers (!!), otherwise they look identical. I wonder if it is the same with the Peacocks? I haven't looked it up yet..... :-) But of course with my raised Swallowtails I was able to take a good look before they were able to fly off!

    3. From what I can see from various images is the male's trailing inner wings appear to be straighter across than the female which is a more pronounced V shape. Thats a 'definite maybe' anyway.{:))
