Orange Tip Emerges

The Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines)

This species is starting to emerge now and as always is very flighty initially and not easy to approach. The males especially are on the move most of the time looking for females.  So far I have only seen one female and three males at various locations. I found that the most likely time that the male pitches for any length of time was later in the afternoon. Even so that was for seconds only and that was on dandelion flowers. The Cuckoo Flower 'Lady's Smock' (one of its favourite food plants) is not out yet. So if you see one, good luck taking a photograph.

  4. Ha! I've only ever got a couple of not very good shots from about 4 feet, they are much too flighty. The females are stiller however. You did so well to get a really good pic.
