A Fallow Event

As a result of an archaeological find in relation to the Romans, it was established that Fallow Deer were present in Southern England during the 1st century AD. However the Normans were certainly responsible for establishing their continued presence. They are currently widespread over the Southern half of the UK mainland from the Wash across to the Mersey. There is quite a variation in coat colour and this changes dependant upon the season.

I took these photographs last week in the Woodland that I regularly walk.
Being the wild variety as opposed to Parkland Deer, they are very difficult to approach and generally are gone before you can even see them. You have to be very quiet, downwind and extremely fortunate normally to get a photograph.

  2. Terrific photos! That first one looks like a 2-headed deer, except I count 5 legs! We don't have these in the Americas.

  7. They look very similar to our White-tailed Deer, also pretty wary of people.
