Guarding the Gate

The Gatekeeper Butterfly (Pyronia tithonus)
Sometimes known as the Hedge Brown is a medium sized species that flies between July and September. Common in England and Wales and the Southern coast of Ireland.
It likes bramble and also likes yellow flowers in particular.

  2. Great title, Roy. I have great difficulty in remembering which is which - meadow brown, ringlets, gatekeepers . . .I shall try harder. Your photos could help me!

  4. One of the last more common species to show us its glorious colours.

    Had one take up residence in the garden yesterday and it was still resting here today!

  6. Love these "zandoogjes", especially the top image of the one feeding at the blossom. They are not that common in my area.

    1. Thanks Mary, they tend to fly along hedgerows and I guess somebody noticed that they pitched on hedges and probably gates, hence the name. Its only a theory of mine.{:))
