Brown Hawker Dragonfly

The Brown Hawker Dragonfly (Aeshna grandis)

There is no mistaking this monster with a length of 73mm.
I was very fortunate to find this female basking in the sun in a woodland ride.
I say fortunate as its normally hawking the woodland and never seems to stop flying.
On mainland British Isles it is a common species although absent from the South West of England and also Scotland.

  1. Doesn't seem to have the blue spots on the abdomen the male has, wings are less bronzey too. Wonderful pictures.

  5. Just catching up on all your posts, some lovely photos. Realy like the Tractor photos, all mum's family are farmers, so reminds me of my childhood.
Super photo of the Dragonfly, have been to the park twice today hoping I would catch one of the Dragonflies, they never stopped flying round :( Not sure yet what they are...
