Common Buzzard

Having quite a varied diet the Common Buzzard likes to add the occasional earthworm to it's menu.
A good place to find them is around freshly excavated Mole Hills as in the images below.
Buzzards are also quite partial to a Mole if one shows up, which is probably why this one I was photographing waited around so long.

  1. Wonderful series Roy. Moles do seem to be very active this Winter. Maybe the constantly saturated ground helps them.

  2. The mole would pack a little more nutrition than an earthworm, but it is staggering to contemplate the number of organisms for which earthworms form a significant part of their diet.

  4. Great shots! I think I need a pet one to eat all the moles that dig up our lawn at times. A downside to having a lot of feeders!

  5. Here in the states people call vultures, "buzzards," but they are mistaken. I have never seen a REAL buzzard. That is quite the bird!

    1. This species is quite common over here Kathie. They are usually soaring high in the sky though.
