Peacock in the Sun

I found this Peacock Butterfly basking in the sun yesterday.
Apart from the odd missing pieces of wing it appeared to have come through the Winter hibernation in reasonable condition. Its reddish brown area of wings have faded into orange and the white areas are somewhat smudged out.

It will find a safe place such as a hollow tree or even a garden shed to sit out the Winter. I have certainly observed one flying in early December and they will emerge in February or March. I have briefly observed one or two already, but this is the first I have taken a photo of this Spring.

A shot taken in the woodland which forms part of the Parkland that I walk.
I must take some bluebell photos before they die away, had the wrong camera on this visit.
They are early this year.

  1. Super images Roy and a nice find. It seems to be very slow for flutters around here this year, nothing to bother the camera yet, so far I've only seen a couple of distant Brimstones. I hope it picks up soon?
Your Bluebells seem to be a bit further on than those around here too?...[;o)

  6. Nice pics Roy, it is lovely to able to photograph our native butterflies again isn't it and hopefully we will have a good summer for them this year :-)

The Bluebells in your neck of the woods are certainly more advanced compared to ours up here!

  7. Lovely butterfly! There are lots of butterflies here in Texas now, but they are all very active and haven't had a photo opportunity. I just love your new header!

    1. Thanks Gunilla. I doubt that I will find many at the moment as we keep getting the Northerly winds.
