Late Arrival

I found this Moorhen chick the other day being fed by its parents.
It appeared to be the only chick they had. Moorhens have 2 to 3 broods a year from April to August with 5 to 11 eggs each brood. Of course not all survive and this was the only one left in what could have been the third brood.

Six days later I photographed what I assumed was the same chick as it was in the same location.
It was surviving well and appeared to be trying to fend for its self at times, as well as the parents bringing food to it.

  1. Oh dear,
It is always sad to observe how many chicks of the sort fall prey to many predators!
    Great series of pictures, Roy!

  5. Fantastic photos of this so cute but ugly little chick! Cross fingers for it but they do grow up really quick.
