Wild Flowers of the Time

Snowdrops and Winter Aconite are two flowers I have photographed this week during a walk.

Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) grow in Winter and early Spring in most of Europe and there are about 20 sub species of this flower. I found these I photographed in an area where I normally expect to find them. Once established they remain and are not easily destroyed by natural causes.

Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) are one of the first to flower usually in January in mild climates. They grow in Europe, Asia and Japan and there are about 8 sub species. Again I found these where I would normally expect to find them on the edge of woodland, in fact more than in the past.

  3. Lovely images Roy, it's always good to see the splash of brightness that these early flowers bring.

The Aconites have been on flower in my garden since the tenth of January and are putting on a good show (in the rain!) and on the 21st. of January I saw a Honey Bee appearing to drink from a water droplet on the flowering Snowdrops at RSPB Sandy...Things are starting to wake up!...[;o)

  10. Gorgeous! Makes me feel like maybe spring will come eventually. I have one little snowdrop plant, but don't think I am going to see it blooming for awhile yet....would have to break through ice! I enjoyed these photos a lot for their color and their hope of spring.
