Pochard (male)

The glorious Pochard (Aythya ferina).
The male shown in all the images below is strikingly colourful, as opposed to the female which is mainly a dull brown with pale flanks.

We get a large influx of Pochard in Autumn from Eastern Europe from October through to March.

Lumix GH3. 100-300mm lens. 300mm(600). 1/500 at f8. ISO320.

Note the image below where the eye displays a black bar across the middle. I have noticed that they do this momentarily. The Tufted Duck also does this.

  1. You've captured some beautiful images here Roy, he's really 'showing' well in that lovely lighting (was that the rare thing we used to have called sunshine?)
Strange that eye bar thing, any idea what causes it...a reflection maybe? I tried Googleing it but drew a blank!
    Love the last shot!...[;o)

    1. Thanks Trevor, yes it was a rare event all of a few minutes I seem to remember.{:))
No, I couldn't find out any more at the moment. Must be some kind of automatic thing that happens like the woodpecker when he starts drilling, his eye covers over, with a film I think.{:))
