Grey Heron v Eel

There was only ever going to be one winner.

Taking some scene shots from a bridge, I noticed a Grey Heron upstream hopping over from one side of the river to the other and then back again. He did this several times. So I walked up one side of the river which was secluded from the edge by long grass.

On arrival at the point where I had observed the heron I discovered that he had moved on to the other bank and was pecking away at something in the grass. This was one of those occasions when I had the wrong lens attached to the camera. (I have had to crop these shots fairly severely) I took a few shots when the heron was on the ground and also when he took off.

Examining the shots later, I could see that the heron had caught an eel.

Anyway the conclusion of this story is that Heron had a successful day and a good meal.
The eel, well, 'eel' be sorry he ever ventured out that day. {:))

  1. Love the ones where the eel is outlined against the sky. I guess this is where your knowledge of bird behaviour pays off!

    1. Thanks Alison, if you watch long enough you tend to realise when they are doing something out of the ordinary.

  2. eel - or could it even be a snake? Well captured Roy and I know you would've been cursing not having the bigger lens; never mind, your butterfly pics are always fabulous!

  3. Great shots although you didn't have the proper lens!!
    It also happens to me!
Just yesterday, I caught a rare dragonfly (to shoot) with the 80/400mm zoom from Nikon and my hubby did it with the 500mm lens!
But the shots were decent! ;-)
    Enjoy your WE, Roy!

  14. Roy, lol! You have such a sense of humor! Job well done, I say, even if you didn't have the best lens for the job! BTW, did you know that Kathryn has a new dog named Roy? She didn't name him. He came to her that way! He is very cute!
