Black-tailed Skimmer

I was fortunate finding these Black-tailed Skimmer Dragonflies.
I can't find any previous record so I don't think I have photographed one before.
Its a fairly common species found mainly in Southern England

It frequents the edge of open water and as its name suggests it habitually skims along above the water.

(Male)

Lumix GH3. 35-100mm lens. 100mm (= 200mm). 1/400 at f5.6. ISO200

Lumix GH3. 35-100mm lens. 100mm (=200mm). 1/2000 at f2.8. ISO200.

The only image I could get of the female which was taken at a separate location and its not that easy to see due to its background.
(I wont discuss the background, but cows had something to do with it.) {:))

  3. Nice to see you bagged this flighty Skimmer Roy. The male posed for you but the female obviously had other things on her mind!

  5. Great shots....even with questionable backgrounds :-) Reminds me a lot of the Blue Dasher here except for the thorax area. We seem to have a lot of blue ones with dark tails

  6. I like those dragons very much especially when young males like this one are turning from yellow to blue as they mature!
This specimen has not bred much yet, his abdomen is still free from the markings left by the female's claws!
Very nice pictures, although the female could have posed on better support for you!! LOL!!

    1. Thanks Noushka, I knew the term "She got her claws into him" must have come from somewhere.(:))
Seriously, I am the better for reading your extensive knowledge on matters of nature as it makes me look harder at things.

  9. You shot them really good Roy. The male is really nice with the blue and yellow. So, the wife likes sh*t. Well, I'm happy we don't have 'perfumed' internet yet.
