The Comma Butterfly

The Comma Butterfly is another one of the hibernating over winter species. Its usually the first butterfly sighting I make in Spring, but this year was beaten into third place.
The book says that this species hibernates in woodland and in Spring the males will establish a territory in open sunny spots along the woodland edge.
This is exactly where I found three different Commas which are my first sighting of the species this Spring.

  1. I usually see them along some high hedges. Must have a closer look as I normally don't see any until the Summer.

  2. Another cracking series of photos Roy, and I'm finding it hard to pick a favourite amongst all these excellent shots :-) Isn't it wonderful to able to photograph these beautiful insects again, especially after what has been such a ponderous spring up until recently :-)

  3. Hi Roy

These are outstanding photos of the Comma. I just love the detail espacially in the third photo. The photo of the Blue Tit in the header is also really nice.

    All the best.

  4. Very nice again Roy. You've seen a lot of butterflies already this spring. I've only seen a few and for sure they didn't want to sit down :-(.

    Regards,

  6. Hi Roy, Commas always seem very special to me. Maybe because they're so different in their shape to the other butterflies we have. That third shot is my favourite.(-: I've not seen one so far this year. By the way, I noticed a bit of Ladies Smock in flower at my local reserve, so maybe the Orange Tips will be on the wing soon! 7. Hello - I've just come across your lovely photographs of the Comma. I hadn't seen any butterflies this year until last week, but now they seem to have really come out. A wonderful sight.

  8. Great shots Roy.

They've all had a hard time these last few months; I hope we see plenty of them this year.
