Woodland Walk

The first of the year of my Woodland Walks around part of the regular location I visit.
Mostly the leaves have not appeared on the various deciduous trees as yet.

There is still quite a lot of standing water in shallow ditches etc that will dry out as the year progresses. Primroses are in flower in some parts, but not as prolific as last year although it is early in the season now.

There are Lesser Celandines, but the ones shown are from a small wood just a short distance from this woodland as are the first few Anemones and Bluebells.

A lot of trees have been felled during the Winter months.

The next four images are of a pond on the heathland (part of the woodland). At this time two years ago, numerous Toads and Frogs visited and spawned in the water and remained for a short period.
Last year there were only a few. A look at the site now revealed that the Forestry Commission have cleared away the vegetation and bushes from around the waters edge. Its rather doubtful if anything at all will be observed this year as it will take some time to recover. It could hardly be described as landscaping and careful management of the environment.  If they haven't visited recently, local Birding Colleagues may not even recognise this area as shown on these images.

  1. Lovely photos of your woodland walk and it's so interesting to see what's out where you are. I didn't realise there were wood anemones and bluebells out so I must go and look for them. I've come across sites, supposedly for protected for nature, that have been 'managed' here too. I've no idea who provides the advice, but it's depressing to see when wildlife is knocked back because of it.

    1. Thanks Wendy, the anemones and bluebells are among the very first, so not many to be seen yet.

  4. Still looking a little barren without green leaves on the trees, nice to see the wild flowers are growing, can be a bit of a shock when they have been in removing trees, doing the same round here.

  5. A great time of the year, sadly spoilt by the 'landscape management brigade'. Seems it's not just my local patch that succumbs to these butchers.
Very early Bluebells Roy; they are only just bursting through the soil here in north Wales.

  8. Hey Roy... So nice to see those Spring beauties starting to bloom. I'm sure you will have many more to show, a delight to these winter sore eyes. The calendars says this is the first day of spring, but still that cold nip in the air here.
Soon lush green will cover those barren areas you showed. Nice seeing what you see.

  9. Simply wonderful to see all the spring flowers starting to appear in the woods isn't it, though other than the Primroses and Celandines (and of course the gorse), I have yet to see any of the others so far this year. Still at least I can enjoy seeing them in your beautiful photos :-)

    Hope you are well :-)
