Redwing - Winter Thrush

During this Winter until now I don't recall observing more than the odd single Redwing.
This species visits the UK during that period from Scandinavia and the Taiga Forests of Northern Europe. Our recent Winters have remained mild in comparison and this and the similar Fieldfare species just don't travel quite so far South.

This last week I was walking an area of the local Parkland, when I could hear the familiar noise of Redwing flying in the trees over my position. Fortunately, one of twenty plus landed in a tree near me and I was able to get a few shots.

  2. Roy ... Unlike you I have been seeing high numbers of Redwing locally (200+) until this week BUT just one or two Fieldfare!

Your subject was obviously very obliging ... well done.

  5. That is the only thing about mild winters, might have lower fuel bills but not so great on seeing winter visitors, the winter 2009-2010 was a great one for me, I had a Fieldfare, a Redpoll, a Brambling, Blackcaps both male and female, not seen any of these since. I even had a flock of Waxwings, I missed them, my partner saw them in our Crab Apple tree for a few seconds, they all flew off when they saw him.

  7. One of my favourite birds and nicely captured :-) There have been fewer than usual up here this winter as well, though interestingly it has been Fieldfares which have been almost totally absent on my local patch.

Still with March now being here I wonder how long it will be till the first Chiffchaffs are heard or Sand Martins are seen :-)

  8. Lovely shot of the redwing. I've had some visitors flocking with the fieldfares and starlings this year. I haven't managed a decent photo yet, though!

  9. What an interesting little bird, Roy. How nice to see them. I did not see any Bohemian Waxwings this year and I am sure it was due to the mild winter we had, though they were seen farther north in Maine.
