A Deer Surprise

Reverting to my former Somerset vernacular.
"I'd seen he before he'd seen I."

During my recent Parkland walk I was slowly moving down a slope in a woodland area which leads to an open circular inlet of water at the edge of the largest lake. Having reached the bottom I stopped to survey the area. I was dressed all in green and matched my background quite well. This must have been the case as about 50 metres ahead of me a Muntjac Deer emerged from behind a willow tree and moved from my left to right across my field of view. Having learned the lesson from a previous occasion relating to deer, I have a preset setting on my camera that allows for a silent shutter action. So this was put into action and I got off several shots before the deer moved out of view. I retraced my steps and left the area, although I was sure that he had seen me eventually as can be seen with his alert look on the last shot.

  2. Hi Roy, great shots ....right place right time.. Don't think I have seen a Muntjac dear in the flesh... How big are they ? Size of a large dog? Would there have been more or would it be out feeding on its own ?

    1. Thanks Amanda, yes about the size of a large Dog.
Probably feeding on its own, they are not gregarious like Fallow.
There are many thousands of them around now, but they are good at hiding away.

    1. Thanks Karen, yes pretty good. The deer is by far the smallest we have here.
