Meadow Brown Butterfly

Another current butterfly species to emerge and look out for, the Meadow Brown.
I found these earlier in the week. Not a particularly colourful species, but nonetheless interesting to see and study.

Interestingly this male below has been joined by a species of the Longhorn Beetle, the Wasp Beetle (Clytus arietis).
The Wasp Beetle's markings are designed to protect it from predators as they imitate a real wasp.
It does not sting however and oddly enough the males are vegetarian, but the females not so.
It can be found from May through to July.

  1. They've been out here for a couple of weeks, rather early I thought!

  2. If I see these butterflies then you see if they are brown or not, they are really great beautiful animals. Beautiful and beautifully photographed :-)
