Woodland Walk

I haven't visited the local Woodland Nature Reserve over Winter, so I thought a quick visit to see how things were progressing now that the weather is becoming mild and Spring is just around the corner.

NB: Without paying too much attention to framing images etc, I briefly photographed things as I observed them during the walk to provide an idea as to what it was like at this time.

The first sight was one of the approach tracks which had been laid down to hard stone which was an improvement.

The woodland tracks and edges didn't feature much in the way of new growth as yet.

There were a few odd Primroses poking though the low vegetation, although they were not as far advanced as some I have seen elsewhere.

The pond below that Newts can be found later in the year certainly had plenty of water.

Plenty of water is what can be viewed here below. This is a low lying area and it will be a while before the water level recedes below ground level.
You wouldn't believe that in a few months time, one will be able to walk though this area and shoot quite a variety of Butterflies and wild flowers including Wild Orchids.

Lesser Celandines (Ranunculus ficaria)

Many of the woodland tracks are still rather wet and muddy under foot.

Gorse (Ulex europaeus)

Another area below that will provide a nice show of Orchids later on.

Red Dead-nettle (Lamium purpureum)

I was fortunate to shoot some Crossbills on the Fir trees here last year.
Hopefully again this year if I am lucky.

  1. it's so interesting to observe Primroses growing natively, since here you buy them in seed-packets to plant in your garden. I suspect the wild ones are always white ones and the nursery varieties are hybridized in their many colours.
