A Late Brown Argus

I was fortunate to find this Brown Argus (Aricia agestis) a few days ago as they are at the very end of their flying time now.
I think from the shape of the body that this one was a female.
Males and females of this species are very hard to differentiate.
The average wingspan of the Brown Argus (Both sexes) is 29mm.

More Migrant Hawker

Migrant Hawker (Aeshna mixta)
You can still find these colourful creatures flying well into November.
Not confined adjacent to water, they can be found well away from it and often perched on vegetation.

Green-veined White Pair

There are still quite a lot of Green-veined White butterflies around.
I was surprised to find this mating pair at this stage of the year.

Its better late than never….

…..even if you are suspended in mid air.

Departing Chiffies

Chiffchaffs continue to make their way South to warmer climes.
However, some do remain in the Southern most part of England over winter.
I was fortunate enough to find a good spot in the Parkland this week where I could observe several continously feeding up on insects in nearby trees.

A Butterfly Day

I mentioned in my last post about the area where I found the Painted Lady Butterfly and at the same time I had found quite a collection of species for the time of year.

The image above is the area in question, which is heathland and forms part of the overall Woodland Nature Reserve

The species below are the best of the rest, although that is a bit disingenuous especially when it relates to the first species shown below.

The Red Admiral.
