Jay

I never pass up a chance of taking a few shots of a Jay as it is such a colourful bird.
I observed this one today in a woodland area in the Parkland where I regularly walk.

The Jay is often described as noisy and also shy, but this one was just shy.

  1. Jays are stunning birds aren't they Roy and these shots really show off their wonderful colours. Sadly these handsome birds are quite scarce east of the Wolds :(

    1. Hey David, that was a quick response. I have only just posted this.
Yes they are stunning birds, but they don't like the cold North East.{:))

  2. Was this taken at Ferry Meadows? If it was taken near the metal footbridge over the river, I stood watching the very same one with my children for some 5 minutes! It's usually quite hard to get them interested but, for the colourful reasons that you mention, they were quite taken with it!

    Lovely photo.

    1. Thanks Dan.
Not quite at the metal bridge, it was further up into the wood near where you walk on down the lane to Longthorpe.
It could have been the same bird though as that is not far from where I observed it today.

  3. Lovely birds Roy. I find them quite difficult to capture with the camera though.

  6. Hi Roy,

I love your pictures of this nice bird. Jays are beautiful and smart. They can be noisy (like some people....) but I've also heard them talk very softly. They are great immitators and can also call like a Common Buzzard.
In Holland the Jay is a sort of common bird but everytime I see one I'm glad I can enjoy this wonder of nature.

    Kind regards,
    Marianne

  8. Nice pictures Roy! There seems to be a fair few of these birds about this year, something to do with the acorn crop failing, I believe, I even had one in the garden the other day!

  11. I like your jay! Very beautiful. Not as blue as ours, but that makes the blue touches that more special and noticeable. I would love to have the opportunity some day to photograph English birds. I deeply regret that my one trip to England and Wales was done before I was interesting in photographing birds. Isn't there some saying about "youth being wasted on the young"? LOL I wasn't that young, but a lot younger than now when I would pay more attention to the birds.

  12. This is a wonderful bird. Much like our Blue Jay which is a very common bird here...except that I've never managed to get a good image.

    1. Thanks Steve. As well as being a resident bird, apparently there has been a big influx of the species from mainland Europe this winter.
